Below: "Cryoconite" holes -- holes created by rocks melting into the glacier. These were on Matanuska Glacier near Anchorage, AK. Note the thick biofilm on the rocks.

Below: "Ballmoss" from Matanuska Glacier, near Anchorage, AK. This moss truly gathers no rocks -- It grows in balls that photosynthesize on the bottom side. The top side turns dark red and brown from too much light. When the ball of moss rolls downhill, it simply rejuvenates whatever side ends up on the bottom.
